Belgian public broadcaster VRT aired a segment two months ago in which its presenters smashed statues of Jesus and Mary live. The scene was part of a so-called “rage room” meant to vent frustrations. Other smashed items included crockery and a computer screen. The three hosts were Eva De Roo, Dries Lenaerts and Sam De Bruyn. This week, Colm Flynn (EWTN) asked them whether they would do the same to symbols of Islam or Judaism. They said they would not (video below). Sam De Bruyn acknowledged that some people might feel offended, but argued that it is not a major issue in Belgium, certainly not for his audience. After public backlash, VRT issued an apology on March 24: “Eva and Dries offer their apologies. The video was intended as a humorous piece, and they underestimated how sensitive religious symbols can be.
