Leo XIV has named another LGBT-inclusive bishop to lead a diocese of 670,000 Catholics. Bishop Michael Saporito, who served under Cardinal Joseph Tobin, led a parish that welcomed gay Catholics and their families. He also participated in private dialogues with LGBT Catholics, saying he “felt enriched by the exchange of personal stories.”
Bishop Johan Bonny of Antwerp, Belgium, is pressing ahead with his plan to ordain married men in 2028. Several married candidates are already being prepared for possible ordination. “I trust that an appropriate regulation can be found by the end of the synodal process in autumn 2028,” Bishop Bonny told Herder Korrespondenz, according to katholisch.de (September 28). Being the son of a physician, my father was frequently called out at mealtime to deal with emergencies. A priest must sacrifice and devote all his energies in serving God.

The Vatican has publicly addressed the long-running case of Argentine priest Carlos Miguel Buela, founder of the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE). The case began formally in May 2020, when Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló established a Special Penal Tribunal to examine allegations against Buela. After hearing the accused, his lawyer and numerous witnesses, the tribunal issued its judgment on 20 July 2021.
